Medifast: The Proven Liquid Diet Used by Doctors Everywhere

By Jane Heartford

Medifast is a strict diet that consists of five small frequent, pre packaged meals enriched with vitamins and minerals and one small high in protein meal made by the dieter. This diet is extremely strict and because of the structure and planning it is highly effective. Support groups are set up to insure success of the dieter, such as online support groups to gain motivation and support of those starting the program, or those further along in the program. There are also online libraries to help with information on eating out, recipes, and even fitness program information.

Medifast is a serious weight loss plan although it was originally designed to be prescribed and monitored only under the guidance of a physician, it currently can be purchased online and from many retailers. This diet is designed for overweight individuals who have a BMI of 30 or above. It is not for those who only wish to shed 20 or less pounds. The medifast plan is not only a good choice for loosing weight it can be beneficial to your health. People with conditions such as diabetes many times need to loose weight as well, the many flexible meal plans this diet offers can help keep insulin levels stable while dieting, which cannot be said for most diets.

The diet plan is designed for the patient to loose 2-5 pounds or more per week. The key to this diet is the carefully monitored meal plan. You eat five small meals which come from the distributor prepackaged, and include things like shakes, oatmeal, bars, soups, and many other options. You are then told to eat one meal containing high in protein meat and approximately two cups of greens such as salads or vegetables. This it referred to as your "lean and green" meal. While dieting it is important to space the meals around 2-3 hours apart and be sure to drink a minimum of 64 oz or water each day.

While on this diet plan your body is basically "tricked" into turning on itself. The body is forced into a metabolic state known as ketosis due to the limited calorie intake(usually around 800-1000). This causes the body to resort to burning fat it has stored in reserves throughout the body, resulting in the tremendous weight loss. Often times the patient reports feeling better than before they began dieting as a result of eating healthy.

The medifast diet(also known as the 5 in 1 diet) offers great success to those wishing to loose substantial weight and willing to follow the program closely. It is important after the desired weight is lost to proceed to the next step which is the transition phase, and slowly eliminate the number of prepackaged meals eaten daily and replace them with normal food. After the transition is complete it is just as important to maintain the diet with healthy eating habits, a healthy lifestyle, and a moderately intense exercise routine. Studies preformed by John Hopkins Weight Loss Management Center among others have rated this diet plan to be one of the more successful on the market. - 29161
