Most Common Errors Women Make When Doing Arm Exercise

By Katherine Crawford M.S.

When it comes to arm exercises for women, it?s the small things that count. How so? The smallest errors in posture and technique can add up, and over time, slow down your progress substantially.

Now most women probably aren?t even conscious of the small mistakes they?re making in the gym. After all, showing up is the biggest part of the battle. So perfecting the technique of each arm exercise probably takes second place.

The good news is that you don?t have to perfect every single movement to the point that it?s flawless. All you have to do is watch out for the big deviations.

Thus, here are 4 mistakes to avoid when doing arm exercises for women:

1. Jerking the barbell up. Most women do this when their using too heavy a weight for curls. Any type of jerking movement when doing a curl will take a substantial load off of your arms and place it elsewhere. The end result? Your arm exercises will lose their effectiveness.

2. Elevating the shoulders when doing press downs. Press downs are great for toning up your triceps, the area where arm fat hangs from. However, letting your shoulders elevate when doing a press down is a sure fire way to take the stress off of the triceps muscle.

3. Allowing the elbows to shift around. Probably the most common error, letting the elbows shift takes all the stress of your arms?not a good thing if you want rapid arm toning. It can also lead to some shoulder impingement issues in the long run. So keep your elbows locked in place!

4. Not placing weight on the heels. You should use the heels of your feet for support. This will keep you much more stable and will allow you to lift much more weight. You?re more likely to keep lower back injuries at bay by using this technique.

Avoiding the above deviations will make your arm exercises that much more effective and will also prevent injury. And although using heavier weights is critical for the fastest arm toning, never go heavy if it requires a sacrifice in form or technique. Always stay safe and lift with the best technique possible. - 29161
